U.S. Stocks Gain as the National Economy Records Unexpected Growth

U.S. Stocks Gain as the National Economy Records Unexpected Growth

An enhanced U.S. stock market is the outcome of faster-than-estimated growth boosted confidence in the world’s largest economy. Amidst the news that the country has received record and unexpected growth in GDP, the U.S. stocks rose to a great extent and that was visible in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index capping its biggest weekly gain since October.

The largest gainer in U.S. stock trade was Red Hat Inc. which capped growth of 14 percent. The software company raised its full-year profit and was able to record higher sales forecasts, which culminated into better trading in the stock market. In asimilar pattern, Responsys Inc. jumped 40 percent as Oracle Corp. agreed to buy the marketing company for $1.5 billion in cash.

It was not that a large number of companies were faring better in the U.S. stock trading as whereas Red Hat Inc. was doing fabulous, on the other hand, the car seller CarMax Inc. could not maintain the momentum and lost to some extent. In day’s trading it declined 9.4 percent as the company could not meet the expectations from the investors.

The S&P500 Receives a Better Outlook

On the better and positive trading day, the S&P 500 added 0.5 percent to a record 1,818.32 at 4 p.m. in New York. Following the pattern, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 42.06 points, or 0.3 percent. Thus, the two largest indicators of the country were on the right track and received better than expected results on a positive trading day.

Positive GDP Expansion and Stimulus Tapering

From the data it looks that rate of expansion in the third quarter in the U.S. was faster than previously estimated. The negativity spread in the U.S. market was though obvious, the unexpected results in the growth are seeding positive waves among investors. Moreover, the major reason behind the growth according to experts is that there has been an increase in health care and companies investments.

With the gross domestic product growth of 4.1 percent annualized rate, the country has been able to mark its presence and showing that it is on the right track. Earlier the Federal Reserve of the country decided to taper its stimulus to some extent.

The central bank of the country realizes that the employment data is showing that the U.S. is doing fairly well and the need for it is decreasing.

Asian Stocks Swinging Between Losses and Gains

Asian Stocks Swinging Between Losses and Gains

After gaining yesterday, Asia’s benchmark stock indexes are trading between gains and losses. This is all happening as Chinese shares fell amid concern funding costs for lenders will remain high. For instance, whereas Japan’s Nikkei 225 Stock Average rose as the yen fell to a five-year low, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell less than 0.1 percent to 138.35 as of 2:36 p.m. in Hong Kong.

However, there was less momentum for Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index which declined to some extent and fell 0.3 percent. Similarly, China’s Shanghai Composite retreated 1.9 percent and Ping An lost 3.7 percent to HK$67.75. On the other hand, continuing its growth today from yesterday, the Nikkei 225 climbed 0.1 percent.

Mixed Trading Day for Asian Market amidst Stimulus from Japanese National Bank
Earlier, the Nikkei faced a little trouble as it declines initially; however, improved later on as the yen weakened to 104.56 per dollar which is the lowest since October 2008. In his statement Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said that the bank is pledging to expand the monetary base by an annual 60 trillion to 70 trillion yen ($670 billion) today.

The statement came after a two-day policy meeting in Tokyo. Earlier, the Topix rose 47 percent this year through yesterday which according to various estimates is the most among major developed markets, particularly, when Europe and the U.S. are not doing well, the Japanese economy faring better is an encouraging factor.

Other Regional Indexes amidst Mixed Trading Day

As the trading was mixed today, some stock markets in Asia fared better; however, some could not maintain the momentum. For instance, whereas Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index (AS51) gained 1.2 percent, South Korea’s Kospi index advanced 0.4 percent. A positive trend was seen in Singapore’s Straits Times Index which rose 0.4 percent.

Whereas New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index slipped 0.6 percent, there was little change in Taiwan’s Taiex Index. Continuing yesterday’s positive trade, India’s S&P BSE Sensex Index gained 0.6 percent. Similarly, whereas Ping An Insurance (Group) Co., China’s second-largest insurer lost the moist and declined 3.7 percent, Mazda Motor Corp., the Japanese carmaker that gets 73 percent of sales abroad, climbed 3.5 percent.

Asian Stocks Slip after Better Trading Yesterday

Asian Stocks Slip after Better Trading Yesterday

Cutting the losses in the last four days, yesterday Asian stocks were on a bright trade; however, that mood did not last long as today they fell to an extent. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index (TPX) slid 0.5 percent as of 1:56 p.m. in Tokyo. Following the trend even Japan’s Topix declined 0.4 percent and Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures dropped 0.1 percent.

Amidst the expectations that U.S. growth data today and payrolls figures tomorrow may determine the mood of the Federal Reserve policy makers, Asian stock trading started with caution. According to some estimates the U.S. economy probably grew at a 2 percent annualized rate in the third quarter; however, this number is not enough for the Fed to taper its stimulus.

Particularly, when the unemployment rate increased to 7.3 percent from 7.2 percent in the previous month, William English, head of the Fed’s Division of Monetary Affairs, believes that the strategy of not raising interest rates is expected.

Twitter IPO Begins but Brings Bad Trade for Facebook and LinkedIn

Twitter Inc. raised $1.82 billion in its initial public offering which in fact is the largest IPO by a technology company since Facebook Inc.’s that took place in the last year. However, this news brought in negative trade for two other social networking companies Facebook and LinkedIn which slipped Wednesday, may be investors are willing to buy Twitter shares now than these two.

Reportedly, Twitter Inc. sold 70 million shares at $26 each. Earlier it offered the shares for $23 to $25. Earlier, while Facebook shed 2% to close at $49.12, LinkedIn declined 1.7% to close at $220.78. These two companies, particularly, Facebook has been faring better recently whose stocks gained strength after and trading close to $50.

Some other social network sites too declined in yesterday’s trading. Whereas shares of Groupon declined 2.7% to close at $10.01, Yelp was down by 6.4% to close at $66.61. Following the trend Zynga Inc. shed 2.5% to close at $3.71 amidst the news that Twitter is faring better and its shares are expected to rise even more.

Mixed Reactions to Twitter IPO

According to various reports reactions on Twitter’s IPO debut have been mixed. Whereas some analysts are warning against too much hype, some others see a potential in its shares and suggesting for investments. Caution was obvious as the investors have already seen the Facebook fiasco.

Japanese Stocks Fall after Yesterday’s Bullish Trading

Japanese Stocks Fall after Yesterday’s Bullish Trading

When things were going better yesterday and investors and traders started seeing positive movement this week in the Asian market, the stocks fell, trimming the best two-month rally for the regional benchmark gauge since the start of 2012. This is happening amidst the speculation that the Federal Reserve may start paring stimulus sooner than previously forecast.

Major Losers

Today’s major lose was Honda Motor Co. which lost 0.6 percent. The company which claims to be Japan’s third-largest carmaker recently brought up its quarterly report for the second-quarter could not meet the estimates from investors and due to that its shares fell remarkably. The fall in motorcycles sales in Southeast Asia was a reason behind low profits.

Another major loser in today’s trading is Alacer Gold Corp. which sank 4.1 percent in Sydney. The falling prices of gold are a major reason behind its slower growth and consequent dismal performance in stock market. A similar trend was seen in the share of National Australia Bank Ltd. (NAB) which retreated 2.3 percent.

A major reason behind the fall of NAB’s share is attributed to an increase in expenses that climbed. Two major companies in Japan, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Japan Airlines Co. are going to release their reports today, and may see a boost in sales and profit thatcould fuel the stock market tomorrow.

A similar trend was seen in China’s Shanghai Composite which declined 0.7 percent after the nation’s top four banks came up with reports that showed that they have been able to profit.

Indexes Drop

Whereas Japan’s Topix index lost 0.3 percent amidst the news that the Bank of Japan maintained its campaign of unprecedented monetary stimulus, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 0.4 percent to 142.63 as of 12:25 p.m. in Hong Kong. Fall in MSCI Asia Pacific Index is due to eight of the 10 industry groups retreating.

U.S. Stocks Down, Asian Stocks Follow the Trend today

U.S. Stocks Down, Asian Stocks Follow the Trend today

Bearish trading is continuing in Asian trade amidst the speculation that the Fed may taper stimulus to a great extent. Earlier, in yesterday’s trading, the U.S. stocks fell which led to a fall in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. It was the first first two-day slide in three weeks. Following the trend, Asian stocks opened lower today.

Speculation on the Fed’s decision to taper stimulus is paying havoc in Asian stocks as they fell apart today and their regional benchmark index was down. This in fact has overshadowed improving China manufacturing data which had earlier boosted Asian stocks this week; however, it does not seem to have any impact now.

The major loser in today’s trading was Sony Corp. which slumped 12 percent in Tokyo.

The company which was expected to fare better has disappointed its investors as it unexpectedly lowered its full-year profit forecast by 40 percent. Similarly, Sydney Airport slumped 3.3 percent as the largest shareholder Macquarie Group Ltd. Decided to give some of its stake to fellow investors.

In the gloomy trading week, some rare performances too have come to front; one of them is Panasonic Corp. whose stocks surged 5 percent on fifth day in row. The company got its performance upped when it doubled its full-year profit forecast. Whereas Japan’s Topix index lost 1.2 percent, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 0.2 percent. Similarly, Singapore’s Straits Times Index declined 0.3 percent.

Facebook, Boeing, Avon Products Inc. Gains

In yesterday’s trading in the U.S. stocks market, Visa Inc. lost 3.5 percent when it failed to meet the expected returns. On the other hand, amidst the news that possible fines related to foreign bribery probes may hurt earnings, Avon Products Inc. fell 22 percent. Some star performances came from Facebook Inc. and Exxon Mobil Corp.

Boeing Co. was also trading better as its stocks advanced 0.6 percent as the company is expected to increase its production to meet the requirements for its 737 jets. However, better performances from select companies did not boost the overall outlook of the market and the S&P 500 dropped 0.4 percent to 1,756.54 at 4 p.m. in New York.

Similarly, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 73.01 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,545.75 and on a not so good trading day more than 7.2 billion shares changed hands on U.S. exchanges which is 21 percent above the three-month average.
